The picture shows me sitting next to Scott Wendholt (Trumpet,) and Chris Byars (Sax,) packed in a passenger van leaving the hotel on our way to the 50th Elmhurst College Jazz Festival with the Grammy Award winning Vanguard Jazz Orchestra
The band was in rare form last night. The students and teachers gave us a rousing ovation after our set.
Excited to start teaching at the City College of New York today. I love teaching because it forces me to put into words my own technique so that the student can understand it and benefit from it. This process makes me a better musician. It is also important for me to give back since people gave to me when I was a young student.
After teaching, I’m headed to perform with the pit orchestra at The Lion King for their evening performance tonight.
Today is a busy day. Up early to fix breakfast for the family and clean the kitchen and get ready for two completely different gigs today.
First, I am excited to be back at “A Bronx Tale” on Broadway for the matinee today in NYC. The book requires a trombone and tuba double so I’ve been practicing the instruments together for the past few days.
Then, tonight I continue playing the week at the Village Vanguard which continues tonight with the Vanguard Jazz Orchestra for our 51st Anniversary. I am blessed for these opportunities.
We are very happy to announce that 2017 is the 51st anniversary. We, the Vanguard Jazz Orchestra – established by Thad Jones and Mel Lewis, will perform the compositions of Thad Jones, Bob Brookmeyer, Jim McNeely and others from our library of over 300 tunes!
Come and join the celebration!

Broadway vocalist Rosena M. Hill (Come Fly Away, The Color Purple) and her husband, Grammy-winning trombonist Jason Jackson (Vanguard Jazz Orchestra, Dizzy Gillespie All Star Big Band), pay tribute to the legendary vocalist Sarah Vaughan.
With jazz pianist Cyrus Chestnut, saxophonist Don Braden, bassist David Wong, drummer Neal Smith, and trumpeter Greg Gisbert the couple together known as “JACK&HILL MUSIC” present a unique musical experience of Jazz, Blues, Broadway, Cabaret, Standards, American Songbook, Spirituals, Latin, and original arrangements into their performances, telling the story of Sarah Vaughan through the music she recorded.
Certified jazz royalty, the late, legendary Vaughan (b. 1924 in Newark, NJ) was nicknamed “The Divine One.” Jazz critic Leonard Feather called her “the most important singer to emerge from the bop era.” Ella Fitzgerald called her the world’s “greatest singing talent.”
The Sounds of Sarah Vaughan keeps her musical legacy alive and introduces new generations to Vaughan’s take on clasiic tunes.
